Art Submission Guidelines

We are committed to producing only the highest quality signs, banners, and promotional items. Part of this commitment involves inspecting your artwork before it goes to print. Among the most common issues that can have a negative impact upon production are:

  • Crop / trim / registration marks
  • Document / image size
  • Fonts / strokes not outlined
  • Transparencies not flattened
  • RGB elements
  • Low-resolution jpegs
  • Ambiguous file names

CROP / TRIM / REGISTRATION MARKS: Our machines will print what they “see.” If you have included these marks on your artwork, they may appear on the final print and / or skew its size. We utilize our own system for final production; marking your graphics is unnecessary.

DOCUMENT / IMAGE SIZE: It is best to submit artwork sized accordingly. One of the most common mistakes designers make is creating artwork at a size that cannot proportionately be enlarged to the dimensions requested for production.

FONTS / STROKES NOT OUTLINED: When fonts & strokes are “outlined,” their apperance is preserved –preventing our ripping software from reinterpreting fonts it may not recognize.

TRANSPARENCIES NOT FLATTENED: Flattening transparencies is the best way to ensure quality print results for your artwork –and eliminate surprises.

RGB ELEMENTS: We strongly urge that all graphics be converted to CMYK prior to submission. Our large format machines print in CMYK. Any RGB elements are, in essence, a gamble. The machines might produce RGB artwork faithfully, but they might not.

LOW-RESOLUTION JPEGS: Jpegs are, in essence, a collection of dots. The more a jpeg is enlarged, the further apart the dots (pixilation). However, the higher the resolution of a jpeg, the more dots per inch –thereby more effective in maintaining integrity and clarity when enlarged.

AMBIGUOUS FILE NAMES: When naming your file, keep final production in mind. File names should be brief and descriptive –in other words, job name and output size.

CAUTION: We do not advise using INDESIGN when generating artwork for large format projects. If you must use Indesign when creating artwork, please follow all criteria above and save files as pdfs.

Formatting Artwork: Best Practices

We can be your last –and best– line of defense before your artwork enters production. From business cards to custom flags to large impact graphics, we can help ensure quality results …provided we can inspect your artwork. In a perfect world, here’s how we would like you to set up your files:

  • Adobe CS6 or lower file versions
  • Adobe InDesign  Users: If you are submitting a *.indd file to us, please make sure to “Package…” your entire project, then compressing it into a *.zip file type, before sending it to us. This will make sure we have all your projects linked images and fonts used.
  • Microsoft Publisher files are not supported. We only use high-end industry standard software at TEI
  • Preferred file extensions: *.eps, *.pdf, and *.ai
  • Set document size to proportionately reflect final output size*
  • Outline all fonts and graphical strokes
  • When submitting photographic images, for highest output quality please make sure they are 240-300dpi. Anything less will prevent high-quality print.
  • Please do NOT submit files over 200MB
  • NO  bleeds, crop/ trim marks, and color registration marks
  • NOTE: bleeds only allowed for print collateral.
  • Convert all elements of your artwork to CMYK
  • Do not use “linked” images, copy and paste.
  • DO NOT save files as multi-page PDFs. Send your print-ready files SEPARATELY, not in multi-page format.
  • Richest black: C=60, M=40, Y=40, K=100
  • Blues: Always best to have a 30-point difference between cyan and magenta. Less than 30 results in possible purple output.
  • FILE NAMING – Keep to 13 characters when submitting artwork to us, for example: “[project]_[size]_[qtyX].pdf”

While we are happy to offer instruction / advice, should the time required exceed 10 minutes, a graphic design fee will be assessed to your order. Rates determined by complexity.
